| when i was a small, pesky second year [okay i'm still small ... and pesky ...] in the college, i was looking to work for someone in our political science department. i had the fortunate experience of working for a graduate student who was on a mad-rush to finish her dissertation that spring/summer because she had a post-doc fellowship at princeton. so obviously she is a star. my job was basically to format her dissertation [which was on how we should distribute humanitarian aid] and compile her bibliography for chapter 1.
after being a fellow at princeton for two years, she has accepted job offer from the university of virginia. her new article, called distribution and emergency, is here.
jennifer rubenstein is a superstar.

| so i'm on leave this quarter, which means that i'm not taking classes. it's pretty much the most awesome thing ever. at least for now.
of course, since it's spring season [which means that BA theses are being due starting 2nd week through ... forever], the reg was packed out on the first day of classes. i keep running into fourth years who are also on leave for the quarter-- what classes are you taking? oh, no classes? me neither! yay!, and then feeling the panic set in-- the uh oh ... my BA advisor wants a "structural overhaul" of my paper ... now.
it's a good feeling.
in other news, the weather dropped about 10 degrees within 10 minutes today. chicago weather is schizophrenic.

| quick staccato:
1) after going back and forth [and back and forth], i've decided against taking classes. this has pretty much been the advice of everyone i know who has already graduated. i'm going to go with them on this one.
2) got back into chicago yesterday afternoon. arizona was great. i never seem to take enough pictures. i really need to work on that. i came back a little bit browner than when i left, which i guess was a given, considering that i went from super pale and white in 50 degree chicago weather to about 7 days of super-dry hot 95+ degree weather.
3) however, since getting back, the list of things to do this weekend has now sprawled onto two post-it notes. [more job applications, moving down the hall, laundry, buying GRE books, finish writing letters, figuring out car stuff, interviews ... anything i'm forgetting?]
4) thanks to mariah, i now listen to what she calls sophisticated rock ala anberlin. fin which is the last song on the cities album. it's a phenomenal rock anthem. love it.
5) roommates are coming back this weekend ... yay-yeah!

| so i have recently been debating whether or not to take classes this spring quarter. those who say that i should argue, this is your last chance in college to just take classes and learn, while those who say that i shouldn't, posit that i have too many other things to do, such as: a) finishing this wretched BA that will eventually [hopefully] be not-so-wretched. i mean it won't ever be a masterpiece [how many BAs do you know of are real masterpieces? let's be honest, as an undergrad, you probably aren't making a huge contribution to the existing literature], but it can't be awful either. b) take the GRE and not fail it. [the second part is key, friends. taking it and scoring badly isn't really an option when the test is $130 and i have no way of taking it until the fall because of my summer fun, i mean, schedule] c) get a real job. interview offers do NOT equal jobs, so until further notice, i still need a full time job.
so yes, the pros versus cons are like ... 1:3. not good for the part of me that wants to take classes, but here we go ... unless the classes i've signed up for tank [which has happenned-- classes that sounded great but for a multitude of reasons, tanked], i'm looking at: 1) calvin on idolatry and true religion [kristine culp] 2) from natural law to human rights [susan frances karr] 3) telling the truth: objectivism, subjectivism, and B.S. [nathaniel hansen]
i know. i'm in arizona, why am i posting? because my friend who i'm going to dinner w/ tonight isn't getting here for another 30 minutes ... so ... yeah ... jennie | | |
